It was in 1994 Sarvathrika Sahodarya Samithi came into existence for providing free food, medicine and care to the poor patients and their bystanders in the Govt. District Hospital , Kollam. As we understand that our free food programme is possible and useful to poor patients, S.S.Samithi had been registered as a Charitable Trust in 1996 bearing Reg.No. 90/96 and the free food and medicine programme was continued until the introduction of lockdown due to Covid-19 in the last days of March 2020.

Meanwhile the Trust came to understand that there are somebody who were discharged from hospital have no home or any shelter to go. So we have started a shelter home for such people by the name ‘S.S.Samithi Abhayakendram’ at Mayyanad panchayat in Kollam district which was formally inaugurated on 15-08-1998 with seven inmates.

We have an agricultural and animal farm at Ottaplamood near Kottiyam. In addition to agriculture we are nurturing cattles, goats, chicken, ducks, rabbits etc. We are getting somewhat of our needs from our farm. It is a fact that most of the people wandering in streets are mentally ill and a majority of them are always carrying knap-sacks. They can be cured if provide proper treatment on time. With an intention to bring back such people to normal life S S Samithi started a treatment programme to the patients.

Now the number of inmates has tremendously increased up to 400. They include destitute, mentally ill people, unhealthy TB patients, old age men and women left out by their families and relatives. In the course of 25 years of service we could sent back more than 650 persons to their home in different parts of the Country even up to Nepal and Bengladesh

We need a sum of 65000 rupees a day to meet our needs. We provide food and medication to almost all of our inmates. A general physician and a psychiatrist used to visit twice in a week and we have five Psychiatric Social Workers, Six Nursing Staff and a Pharmacist for caring the inmates in addition to 30 office bearers and care givers. We are giving hospital treatment for our inmates in Govt. District hospital, Kollam, Govt. TB hospital, Kollam, Mayyanad Family Health Centre, The Govt. Medical College,TVM and Mental health Centre,Peroorkada,TVM. Though we are providing Food, shelter and medication to our inmates, we cannot provide sufficient and continuous treatment for the mentally ill people due to the lack of proper treatment facilities. With the aim we have started a mental health clinic at our Ottaplamoodu campus. It is a large scale plan requiring an amount of Rupees 7.55 crores. For its construction we had taken a loan for 268 lakh rupees, but we could not complete this project. So we seek funding help from kind hearted people and renowned firms. Meanwhile S S Samithi Abhayakendram celebrated its Silver Jubilee on 19th August 2023 at S S Samithi Sahrudaya Hall. Hon. Minister Mrs. Chinju Rani inaugurated the function. Sri. N.K.Premachandran MP, Sri. M. Nousahd MLA, Sri. K. Somaprasad Ex MP and several celebrities were present at the inaugural function.
